Men’s Irish Knit Cardigan

The pattern of the day is a wonderful knitted cardigan pattern in Irish style. The popular look of cables turns this cardigan into a wearable keepsake. Fitted Cardigan Knitting Pattern for Men

How to knit men’s cardigan:

BACK SIDE:

Cast on 228 stitches and rib 1×1 for 7 cm. Work the stitches as follows: apply diagram no.1 for 26 stitches; diagram no.2 for 18 stitches; diagram no.1 for 26 stitches. Knit body for 48 cm and cast off 3+2+1 stitches at both sides for the armhole. When the body measures 68 cm,  cast off remaining 216 stitches together and bind off.

FRONT SIDE:

Cast on 68 stitches and rib 1×1 for 7 cm. Work the stitches as follows beginning from the front middle part: 1×1 ribbing on 10 stitches, diagram no.1 on 26 stitches, diagram no.2 on 18 stitches, diagram no.1 on 14 stitches. Knit body for 48 cm and cast off 3+2+1 stitches at one side for the armhole. When the body measures 52 cm, cast off 1 stitch 32 times in every row in the front middle part for the neck. Knit body for 68 cm. Cast off 20 stitches together for the shoulder while ribbing 1×1 on 10 stitches remaining in the front middle part for further 10 cm and bind off. Knit the other front piece in the same way. 10-cm ribs which are knitted in the front middle parts are sewn to the back neck. Open 5 buttonholes spacing 10 cm on the left side.

SLEEVES:

Cast on 52 stitches and rib 1×1 for 7 cm. Work the stitches as follows:  knit 6 double moss stitches, purl 1, knit 6, apply diagram no.1 on 26 stitches, knit 6, purl 1, knit 6 double moss stitches. Twist 6 knit stitches as 3+3 to the same direction spacing 6 rows. Increase 1 at both sides 14 times spacing 2 cm and reach to 80 stitches. When the sleeve measures 40 cm, cast off 1 stitch at both sides 29 times for the armhole, spacing 3+2+1+2 rows, respectively. When the sleeve measures 66 cm, bind off with remaining 10 stitches. Knit the other sleeve in the same way.

POCKET:

Cast on 33 stitches and apply the model in diagram no.1. When the pocket measures 12 cm, rib 1×1 for 5 cm and then cast off all stitches together, and bind off. Knit 2 pieces and sew on the front pieces.

  • I may be a little dense, but I don’t see the diagrams for the cables...? Is there a link to them? The pattern references Diagram No. 1 and Diagram No.2.

  • Beautiful cardigan! Classy looking! I'm confused: for the pockets, the pattern says to cast on 33 stitches and to use Diagram 1, which contains 26 stitches. What pattern gets applied to the remaining 7 stitches? Beginning the Diagram again would result in an assemmetric look on the pocket. Am I missing something here?
